Week 6
Seriously, it was a great week. We now really have a good sense for how high up it seems when we are standing on the first floor. It is an awesome view, and you are way up off the ground. It's really starting to take shape. And, it sure is muddy, but the carpenters have worked hard to get us to where we are right now.
There will be a lot of windows, which you cannot really see now because the rough openings are covered up. But the back end is basically all glass, which is what this location is all about. Had Chuck Benjamin over this week to take a look and see what Tufco flooring will work for the main garage, the mancave garage and the hunting room. These are extremely important decisions. We also went to Baltic Ohio today and looked at cabinets at Schlabachs. We are probably pretty close on deciding on the hardwood floor and the cabinets.
So, enjoy the pictures. Hope to show you some with a roof on it next week !!

Week 5
The weather improved as the week wore on. By midweek, they had removed the blankets from the basement floor and filled in around the edges of the walls and in the garage area with stone. They laid out the basement with chalk lines, so I got to kind of see how that is going to look. We have decided to put a full kitchen in the basement which will allow us to not have to have two ovens upstairs and will make entertaining down there easier. Will be putting up a wall midway from back to front in the garage portion of the basement so that the 4-wheeler(s), golf cart, mowers, etc are separate from the rest of the unfinished part of the basement and we can vent it and not have to condition it like the rest of the house.
Weather forecase is OK for the upcoming week, with highs around 40 or so and not real cold at night. So, our expectation is that the framers will be there this week and we will have walls up during week 6. We'll see :)

Week 3
Week 3 was another short week, as it was the week between Christmas and New Years. No visible progress on the house, but that's OK. We used the week to make some decisions, so here they are.
Stone - Stonecraft Heritage Chardonnay
Siding - Hardieplank horizontal siding in khaki brown
Shingles - Tamko Heritqage XL AR in Aged Wood color
Windows - Andersen 400 Series, double hung
Glass doors - Andersen Frenchwood, hinged
Next week, it looks like we will beging building walls.
Week 2
Week 2 began on December 21, so it was a short week. The weather was going to be around 40 or so for a high on Thursday and Friday, so we really wanted to get the basement floor poured. On Monday, the wall forms were torn down. On Tuesday, the basement floor was prepared and on Wednesday the floor was poured. The masons worked all day to get it smoothed out and they got done just after dark. This accomplishment means that we really can progress throughout the winter and hit our target move in date this summer.
Week 1
Week 1 really did not begin until Monday December 14. We had one small issue to work out that kept us from digging. That issue was that one corner of the house encroached on the setback requirements from the Country Club. It's a 50 foot setback and just one corner was over by about 7 feet really not noticeable. Nevertheless, we needed to try to get a variance from CCC. Otherwise, the house just was not going to work on this lot. Also, by this time, we were pretty much committed to this house design, so a big disappointment was in the offing if this variance had not been granted. But, it was. The CCC Board called a special meeting on December 7 and approved the variance. So we were off to the races
So, digging commenced on December 14. The hole was dug, footers were poured and walls were formed. Weather was OK, good enough to do this work. The key was getting the walls poured so that we could pour the basement floor before the weather got too cold. That way, we could get walls built and work all winter. By the end of the week, the walls were poured. A successful week.

The Beginning
Welcome to OUR HOUSE. We will post progress on the construction of our new house in Chillicothe, Ohio each week, probably doing updates over the weekends, so you can see the progress.
But, here is how it happened, and it happened fast. As you know, we have been living somewhat of a gypsy life for the past 3+ years, and it is getting tiring. We were on vacation around Labor Day, 2009 and we decided that we were not going back to York, PA so we needed to sell that place. The place we have been living at in Chillicothe is too small. I have stuff, a lot of stuff, scattered all over Ross County. I can't even remember where it all is. So, we decided that we needed to sell the place in York, sell the current place in Chillicothe, and move to another place in Chillicothe, a place to call home. It is time.
Marilyn saw a neighborhood up by the golf course ( Chillicothe Country Club, purported to be a Donald Ross course, but I think it may have been built by somebody named Rhauss, or Rouse, or something like that, or else he was drunk when he did it :)). But, anyway we went up to find it and it is new and there is nobody living there yet, but one builder home is there and one private home is under construction. We got some info and talked to the builder and decided to build. It pretty much happened that fast.
The lot is small, it is a great view. I can see the mill, I can see all the way to Londonderry, through the valley for miles. We need to design a house that captures the view. It is on the golf course, hole number 7 ( and 16) tee box. The lot slopes, so a walkout lower level is a must.
Marilyn found a Donald Gardner design that fits the lot well. We talked to the bank, and VOILA !!, we decided to go ahead an do this. It seemed kind of like a quick decision, but we want to get in the house the summer of 2010, so we gotta go. The house in York is up for sale, the condo in Chillicothe will go up for sale in March, and we are off to the races.
You can see the view from the lot and a photo of the house plans. It's one story, walkout basement, decent outside living area, with a deck, screened in porch, and patio that is covered by the deck.
